Preparation of the Watermelon Mojito cocktail
Blend the watermelon in a blender Place the mint leaves in the bottom, then add the sugar and the lime cut into wedges Muddle everything carefully to extract the flavors, taking care not to shred the mint Fill half the glass with crushed ice (or 4 to 6 ice cubes) Pour in the rum and watermelon juice and stir gently. Top up the glass with sparkling water and add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters Serve with a straw and a stirrer. You can add a sprig of mint and a lime wheel for garnish.
History of the Watermelon Mojito cocktail
The Watermelon Mojito follows in the footsteps of the Cuban mojito, an iconic cocktail associated with Havana’s bar culture and an island tradition in which rum, mint, lime, and cane sugar have long mingled with tropical fruits. Its watermelon version does not stem from a clearly documented distinct historical origin, but rather from a modern adaptation born of the desire to bring more freshness, sweetness, and color to an already very summery classic.
What defines it is the balance between the acidity of lime, the brightness of mint, the roundness of white rum, and the watery texture of the fruit, lengthened with sparkling water and served very cold with crushed ice. Watermelon enhances the cocktail’s refreshing character while softening the profile of the traditional mojito, making it a particularly popular variation for summer drinking occasions. Like many contemporary takes on great Cuban classics, it preserves the spirit of the mojito while highlighting a seasonal fruit.
