Histoire
The Vodka Stinger is a modern variation of the Stinger, a cocktail that appeared in the United States in the early 20th century. The classic Stinger traditionally combined cognac and white crème de menthe; the use of vodka in place of cognac developed later, as this neutral spirit began to gain popularity in cocktails, especially from the mid-century onward.
The Stinger itself is generally associated with the American bar culture of the Prohibition and post-Prohibition eras. Its simple composition, based on the balance between a spirit and the sweet freshness of crème de menthe, made it a popular digestif. The shift to the Vodka Stinger reflects changing tastes toward lighter drinks, less oaky and more discreet on the palate.
In its vodka version, the cocktail retains the spirit of the original model: a short preparation, served over ice, where the vodka brings neutrality and liveliness, while the white crème de menthe provides the minty aroma and sweetness. This type of adaptation illustrates well how many classic cocktails were reinterpreted during the 20th century to suit spirits that had become fashionable.
