Histoire
The Stinger is a classic cocktail that appeared in the United States, generally associated with the late 19th century or the early 20th century. It did not originate in Africa, despite the indication provided: known historical sources place its birth in American bar culture, where it was enjoyed as an elegant digestif, served after dinner.
Its traditional composition is very simple: cognac and white crème de menthe, mixed with ice and then served well chilled. The balance between the strength of the cognac and the minty freshness of the liqueur explains the cocktail's success in the era of grand hotels and private clubs, when short, refined drinks that were easy to prepare were in demand.
The Stinger enjoyed real popularity during the first half of the 20th century, before gradually falling out of favor. Today, it remains an emblematic example of the golden age of classic cocktails: a minimalist recipe with a clean aromatic profile, illustrating the way mixology of that period often paired a fine spirit with an flavored liqueur.
