Histoire
The Vesper is a cocktail made famous by Ian Fleming in Casino Royale (1953), where James Bond orders a very specific version of it. Although it is now associated with the world of Bond, its literary creation belongs to a period when gin- and vodka-based cocktails were beginning to gain popularity in major European cities, especially London, a cultural and social hub in the mid-20th century.
The original recipe is attributed to Fleming himself, who has Bond have it made under the name Vesper Martini. It combines gin, vodka, and Lillet, garnished with a lemon twist. Lillet, a French wine-based aperitif, adds an aromatic, slightly bitter note that sets the Vesper apart from classic martinis, traditionally made with gin and vermouth.
The name Vesper comes from the character Vesper Lynd, a central figure in the novel. The cocktail was therefore not born from a long-established bar tradition, but from a fictional creation that became real through its fame. Its appearance in a James Bond novel has greatly helped make it a symbol of sophistication, modernity, and British elegance, closely linked to London in the popular imagination.
