Histoire
The Tom & Jerry is a hot cocktail made with egg, spirits, and spices, which appeared in the 19th century in the United States. Its origin is generally attributed to journalist and drinks author Pierce Egan, who first popularized the expression in his book Life in London in the early 1820s. The name was later adopted by American bartenders to refer to this festive drink served mainly in winter, with no certain connection to the cartoon characters that appeared much later.
The recipe developed within the tradition of eggnogs and hot milk- or water-based drinks, which were very common in 19th-century North America. It typically combines beaten egg, sugar, brandy or dark rum, then hot water, before being flavored with nutmeg and sometimes clove. This structure reflects an era when cocktails served as much as comforting drinks as they did celebratory ones.
The Tom & Jerry enjoyed great popularity in American parlors, hotels, and bars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially during the Christmas season. It is often prepared in two parts: a frothy base made with the yolks and whites beaten with sugar, then diluted with hot water and spirits, resulting in a rich, creamy texture. Even today, it remains a historic classic associated with winter traditions in the United States.
