Histoire
The Tequila Sunset is a contemporary cocktail whose purported origin in Eastern Europe seems to reflect more of a local spread or regional adaptation than a historically well-documented creation. Unlike classics of the international repertoire, there is no universally recognized source that can definitively establish its place and date of creation. It nonetheless belongs to the broad family of visually striking cocktails, popularized in bars from the second half of the 20th century onward.
Its structure, based on tequila and orange juice, immediately recalls the Tequila Sunrise, a cocktail that became famous in the 1970s. Replacing grenadine with blackberry liqueur gives the Tequila Sunset a darker, fruitier signature, with a gradient effect reminiscent of a sunset, hence its name. This variation seems to have emerged in contexts where the aim was to offer a softer, more colorful version or one that could more easily be adapted with locally available products.
In Eastern European countries, several sunrise/sunset-style cocktails circulated in bar culture during the post-Soviet era, often by imitating Western recipes or by reinterpreting them with fruit liqueurs that were very common in the region. Blackberry liqueur, particularly well suited to black fruit and berry traditions, may have encouraged the appearance of this variation. The Tequila Sunset should therefore be understood as an internationally inspired cocktail, probably popularized through bar service rather than through a single, formal historical origin.
