Histoire
The Tequila Sunrise is generally associated with the American bar scene of the 20th century, rather than Eastern Europe. Its best-known version appeared in the early 1970s in California, in the context of cocktail culture in West Coast bars. The name evokes the cocktail’s distinctive visual effect: the grenadine, being denser, sinks through the glass and creates a gradient reminiscent of a sunrise.
The modern recipe mainly combines tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup. This simple combination helped make it popular, especially because it showcases tequila in a smooth and approachable way. The cocktail gained popularity during a period when colorful, easy-to-make, visually appealing drinks were enjoying great success.
There are, however, earlier precedents for the name Tequila Sunrise. A different version, sometimes mentioned in historical sources, was already circulating in the 1930s or 1940s and contained lime, soda, and tequila, with a profile quite unlike the current recipe. The version that became iconic in the 1970s is therefore a more modern reinterpretation, which established the image of the cocktail as we know it today.
