Histoire
The Ritz Old Fashioned is a contemporary variation on the great classic Old Fashioned, whose origins date back to the 19th century in the American whisky cocktail tradition. Where the historic Old Fashioned is made mainly with whisky, sugar, bitters and a citrus peel, this version adds Grand Marnier and lemon juice, giving it a sweeter, more citrus-forward signature while retaining the structural backbone of Angostura bitters and whisky.
Despite its name, the Ritz Old Fashioned is not a cocktail from a clearly documented old tradition in Africa. The mention of Africa rather refers, in some contexts, to a modern inspiration or geographical attribution, but there is no widely recognized historical source that would make it an African cocktail of origin. It is more of an international reinterpretation of a great classic, probably popularized in hotel bars or contemporary cocktail menus.
The presence of Grand Marnier links the recipe to a more French and modern approach to the whisky sour or the reworked Old Fashioned. Angostura brings spicy, bitter depth, the whisky provides the structure, while the lemon and orange liqueur balance the whole. This kind of construction reflects the evolution of classic cocktails throughout the 20th century, when many recipes were adapted to contemporary tastes and international influences.
