Histoire
The Red Sea Sunrise belongs to the family of “sunrise” cocktails, whose idea is to create a visual sunrise effect using a dense syrup, usually grenadine, that settles at the bottom of the glass. This presentation became especially popular in the 20th century, particularly with simple, colorful drinks that are easy to prepare in bars and casual drinking settings. The principle of the red-orange gradient is more important than the existence of a single, fixed recipe.
For the Red Sea Sunrise, the combination of lemonade, orange juice, and grenadine follows codes very close to those of the famous Tequila Sunrise, but in a non-alcoholic version. The orange juice provides the fruity base and golden color, while the grenadine tints the lower part of the glass a deep red. The lemonade, meanwhile, adds freshness and effervescence, bringing this drink closer to the sparkling cocktails that emerged and became popular during the 20th century.
The name Red Sea Sunrise does not belong to a universally codified historical classic like some of the great cocktails in the repertoire, and there are probably several local or commercial variations under this name. Its exact origin is therefore difficult to attribute to a single date or creator. Its logic, however, is clear: it extends the tradition of “sunrise” drinks centered on aesthetics, sweetness, and accessibility rather than on a complex composition or a specific base spirit.
