Histoire
Blue Spring belongs to the family of modern cocktails based on vodka and flavored liqueurs, rather than to that of the great historical classics of the 19th century. Its composition — vodka, blue curaçao, orange curaçao, and lemonade — evokes the colorful, visually striking cocktails that emerged with the rise of flavored spirits and ready-to-drink beverages in the late 20th century. It is not an old recipe codified in reference works such as Jerry Thomas or the early mixology manuals.
Blue curaçao, the signature ingredient in this cocktail, is itself a relatively recent creation in the history of mixed drinks. It is inspired by traditional curaçao, an orange-peel liqueur originating from the island of Curaçao in the Dutch Antilles, but its blue coloring was popularized in the 20th century to give cocktails a more distinctive appearance. Orange curaçao, meanwhile, brings the bitter orange flavor profile that connects it to the tradition of citrus liqueurs long used in Europe.
Blue Spring should therefore be understood as a contemporary, easy-to-serve cocktail designed for freshness, sweetness, and visual impact. The lemonade lengthens the drink and softens the overall profile, while the vodka provides a neutral base that highlights the citrus notes. Its name suggests more of a bar or party creation than a specific geographic origin, and to my knowledge there is no single historical source that can attribute its invention to a particular place or bartender.
