Histoire
The Orange Blossom is a classic cocktail with an American spirit, appearing in the first half of the 20th century, at a time when bars in the United States were looking to showcase citrus juices and white spirits. Its simple structure, based on gin and grapefruit or orange juice depending on the variation, belongs to the broad family of “sour” drinks and brunch cocktails, very popular before and after Prohibition.
Its name can sometimes be confusing, as there are several similar drinks bearing the Orange Blossom name. In the most common tradition, it is a mix of gin, citrus juice, and a sweet touch, sometimes enhanced with a dash of bitters. This diversity reflects the history of bar recipes of the era: they circulated mainly through bartenders, hotels, and cocktail books rather than through strict standardization.
The modern version with almond syrup and Angostura brings a rounder, more aromatic dimension than the simplest historical recipes. Almond evokes the apricot kernels or orgeat found in several classic cocktails, while Angostura adds spicy depth. With gin, grapefruit, and orange, this creates a contemporary interpretation of a cocktail long associated with citrus freshness and the elegance of American bars.
