Histoire
The Strawberry Mojito is a modern variation of the famous Cuban mojito, a cocktail that originated in Havana in the 16th century. The traditional mojito, made with white rum, sugar, mint, lime juice, and soda water, has its roots in a drink called “El Draque,” named in tribute to the English explorer Sir Francis Drake. This concoction was used to mask the harsh taste of raw rum and was prized for its refreshing and digestive qualities.
The strawberry version of the mojito is a contemporary adaptation that taps into the growing popularity of fruity, flavored cocktails. Introduced in bars in the second half of the 20th century, this variation partially replaces the lime with strawberry juice or purée, adding natural sweetness and a vibrant color while preserving the key elements of fresh mint and white rum. The strawberry thus enhances the cocktail’s tangy character and amplifies its freshness.
This cocktail has become a summer classic thanks to its balance of fruity sweetness and zesty brightness, paying homage to the original mojito while adapting to contemporary tastes. Enjoyed both at summer parties and in modern mixology venues, the Strawberry Mojito is a perfect example of how cocktails evolve by blending tradition with flavor innovation.
