Histoire
Gin Tonic traces its origins back to the 19th century, in the context of the British Empire in India. At the time, English officers and administrators drank tonic water containing quinine, a remedy used against malaria, but its bitterness was very pronounced. To make the drink more palatable, they mixed it with gin, already popular among the British, thus creating a combination that was both practical and more pleasant to the taste.
The cocktail’s history is therefore tied to a medicinal use before becoming an aperitif classic. Gin, a spirit flavored with juniper berries, was easy to pair with tonic water, whose bitter, effervescent notes blended well with its aromas. Lemon, added later, enhanced the overall freshness and helped balance the bitterness of the tonic.
Over time, the Gin Tonic went from a utilitarian drink to an iconic cocktail. Very popular in English-speaking countries, it established itself in the 20th century as a major international classic, appreciated for its simplicity and lightness. Served with ice cubes and a slice or twist of lemon, it remains one of the best-known cocktails in the world today.
