Histoire
The Florida Sunrise is a contemporary cocktail inspired by the “sunrise” family, those layered drinks in which a dense syrup, often grenadine, slowly sinks through the glass to create a visual effect evoking a sunrise. Its simple composition — tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup — places it directly in the lineage of the famous Tequila Sunrise, but under a name that places greater emphasis on the image of a tropical, Floridian rising sun.
Its history is not tied to a great classic cocktail codified by historical sources from the 19th or early 20th century. The Florida Sunrise belongs instead to the repertoire of bar cocktails that emerged and became popular in the second half of the 20th century, when recipes based on fruit juices and colored liqueurs became established in American bars. As with the Tequila Sunrise, the red-and-orange gradient effect is central to its identity, even more so than the existence of a universally fixed recipe from the outset.
The choice of the name Florida likely refers to its association with citrus fruits, especially oranges, an emblematic product of Florida. This geographical reference helps evoke a sunny, fruity, and approachable flavor profile, without any certainty that the cocktail can be attributed to a specific bartender or establishment. The Florida Sunrise thus illustrates a tradition of visually striking, easy-to-make cocktails, built on a few simple ingredients and a play of color.
