Histoire
The Desperado is a South American-inspired cocktail that belongs to the broad family of drinks combining beer and spirits, a common practice in several Latin American countries. Its simple composition — pale beer, tequila, and lemon — evokes a bar drink that is fresh and straightforward, meant to be served ice-cold and drunk quickly. It is not a classic cocktail codified by the major schools of mixology, but rather a modern or regional creation, born in a relaxed drinking context.
Its link to South America lies mainly in its use of ingredients familiar to local drinking culture, especially pale beer and the acidity of lemon, which recall the refreshing drinks served in bars and cantinas. Tequila, meanwhile, is a spirit originating in Mexico, in North America, but its use in this type of recipe has spread widely throughout the American continent, including South America, where it has become a common ingredient in festive cocktails.
The name Desperado, meaning “outlaw” or “bold man,” reinforces this image of a raw, warm drink with no excessive sophistication. Like many popular cocktails born outside official recipe books, its exact origin is difficult to document: it seems to stem more from bar tradition than from an invention attributable to a single place or creator. Its success therefore rests mainly on its simplicity, its thirst-quenching character, and the balance between the sweetness of the beer, the strength of the tequila, and the liveliness of the lemon.
