Histoire
The Campari Milano is a contemporary cocktail inspired by the great tradition of Italian aperitifs, rather than an old historical creation with perfectly documented origins. It belongs to the family of sparkling drinks based on Prosecco, very popular in Northern Italy, where people like to pair Campari’s aromatic bitterness with softer, more floral profiles.
Campari, created in Milan in the mid-19th century by Gaspare Campari, was first used in many iconic Italian aperitivo cocktails. Its bitter flavor, based on herbs, citrus, and spices, quickly made it a central ingredient in Italian mixology. The addition of elderflower syrup to Prosecco reflects a more recent evolution in taste, with a search for balance between bitterness, freshness, and floral notes.
The name “Milano” refers to Campari’s Milanese roots and to the culture of the aperitivo, deeply associated with the city. This cocktail should therefore be understood as a modern interpretation of Milanese heritage: it takes an iconic historical ingredient, pairs it with contemporary drinking codes, and offers a softer, more elegant version of Italian spritzes and sparkling cocktails.
