Histoire
The After Eight is a European cocktail whose origins date back to the second half of the 20th century, inspired by the famous After Eight mints brand, those mint chocolates that enjoyed immense success from their creation in 1962 by the British company Rowntree's. This cocktail brings together the dominant pairing of mint and chocolate, adding the richness of Irish cream and the depth of coffee liqueur to recreate the balance reminiscent of the candy’s flavors.
The composition of the After Eight is mainly based on crème de menthe, which provides its characteristic freshness, blended with Irish cream, which lends a smooth texture and subtle alcoholic sweetness, while coffee liqueur adds roasted, bitter notes. This combination was generally popularized in European bars in the 1970s and 1980s, a period during which creamy, sweet cocktails found a wide audience.
This cocktail is often served as a digestif at the end of a meal, echoing the tradition of chocolate mints offered after dinner in Anglo-Saxon and European countries. Its name directly refers to the famous “After Eight” sweet treat, symbolizing a refined little indulgence and evoking the convivial atmosphere of evening gatherings.
